‘Sylvania Products Company’ (1924)
In 1924 George Risell got $ 500.00 from his company Nilco to develop a suitable radio tube. After he succeeded the Sylvania Products Company was established to market those tubes. Soon after a new factory was made in the city of Emporium Pennsylvania to counter the ever increasing demand for vacuum tubes.
In 1931 the Hygrade Sylvania Corp. was established by three firms among those was the Sylvania Products Company. The other two firms started at the turn of the century (1900) with repairing light bulbs by opening the glass envelope and replacing the broken filament wires with new ones and the sealing the bulb again.
In the thirties Sylvania was entangled in a legal fight with General Electric because of the intellectual property regarding the manufacturing of fluorescent lamps.
In the beginning of the forties, Sylvania changes his name in Sylvania Electric Products Inc. And the new yellow/black logo with the characteristic bolt of lightning..

After the second world war the selling of electric audio appliances like radios and TV’s really took off and Sylvania opened one factory after another to cope with this increasing demand.

In the beginning of the Sixties Sylvania introduced their so called ‘Gold Brand’ series to create a more reliable tube with the use of three mica spacers inside the tube, gold plated connectors and a gold lettering. GE did something similar with their ‘Five Star’ series of professional tubes.
