Radio Corporation of America was founded by General Electric (GE), AT&T and Westinghouse in October 1919 with the purpose to take care of long distance radio transmissions and to establish a nationwide radio network with NBC short for the National Broadcast Corporation. At first the vacuum tubes needed in radio transmission equipment were manufactured by GE and Westinghouse marketed as RCA. Till 1931 RCA did not make the tubes themselves.
In 1929 RCA acquired the Victor Talking Machine Company and at the start of the thirties RCA took over factories from GE and Westinghouse and started to make audio-equipment and vacuum tubes under the name RCA Radiotron.

The best known tube of RCA-Radiotron is the Beamtetrode 6L6 which was initially produced under the license of Marconi-Osram as the American version of the KT66. Initially, the 6L6 tubes were fitted with a black coated metal casing which was replaced by glass from the 6L6G.
